چکیده

Quantitative image analysis (QIA) was used for monitoring the morphology of activated sludge (AS) during a granulation process and, thus, to define and quantify, unequivocally, structural changes in microbial aggregates correlated with properties rates. Two sequencing batch reactors fed acetate at organic loading rates 1.1 ± 0.6 kgCOD m−3 d−1 (R1) 2.0 0.2 (R2) three minimal imposed settling velocities (0.27 m h−1, 0.53 5.3 h−1) induced distinct processes QIA results evidenced turning point from flocculation by revealing differences aggregates’ stratification patterns quantifying equivalent diameter (Deq) 200 μm ≤ Deq 650 μm. Multivariate statistical data allowed distinguish status both systems, clustering observations according aggregation granules maturation status, successfully predicting volume index measured 5 min (SVI5) 30 (SVI30). These evidence possibility defining unequivocally rate anticipating early stages using data. Hence, could be predict episodes disruption hindered ability aerobic processes.

Textile wastewater treatment: aerobic granular sludge vs activated sludge systems.

Textile effluents are characterised by high content of recalcitrant compounds and are often discharged (together with municipal wastewater to increase their treatability) into centralized wastewater treatment plants with a complex treatment scheme. This paper reports the results achieved adopting a granular sludge system (sequencing batch biofilter granular reactor - SBBGR) to treat mixed munic...

AquaNereda Aerobic Granular Sludge Technology Aerobic Granular Sludge

This advanced nutrient removal process can reduce footprint up to 75% and energy up to 50% when compared to conventional activated sludge systems. One of the defining characteristics of the granule is rapid settling which in turn allows for an increase in the biomass concentration. The granules are comprised of true biomass and do not require carriers. The layered microbial community that forms...

Aerobic granular sludge

In recent years, a significant part of research on wastewater treatment has focussed on development of compact systems. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) can be designed compact when biomass is maintained in the system without the use of conventional settling tanks as in flocculated activated sludge systems. Examples are developments in the field of Membrane BioReactors, Biological Aerated Fil...

Monitoring of activated sludge settling ability through image analysis: validation on full-scale wastewater treatment plants.

In recent years, a great deal of attention has been focused on the research of activated sludge processes, where the solid-liquid separation phase is frequently considered of critical importance, due to the different problems that severely affect the compaction and the settling of the sludge. Bearing that in mind, in this work, image analysis routines were developed in Matlab environment, allow...
